Svolvaer...moving north to Tromso

I am back! Time is flying. We have had a little illness and this slowed us down for a few days. Stomach bug, not exactly sure what but I caught it and Glenn caught it 24 hr later. We could not eat for a couple of days but we are now all better.
From the village of A in the Lofoten, we went to Leknes, a central place in the Lofoten. This is probably the most uninteresting place we have visited so far. NOTHING to see, nothing good to eat, a small town of no interest. With a car, we could have gone to the Viking outdoor museum, and to a few beaches. We had a great apartment, the entire ground floor of a three story house, slightly outside of town. We got an opportunity to read and rest. Next day, we moved to Svolvaer by bus again. This time we were not dissappointed. It is a beautiful little town. There was a music festival, so there were many people and boats in the harbour. Fun. In the evening, we went to see the new Jason Bourne movie and saw it on the day of release, in Svolvaer ....and in English! Since we were not very well, we had another restful couple of days, just walking around the town and listening to music.

Then long boat trip from Svolvaer to Tromso on the Hurtigruten boat. We were told at the reception that we should be on the desk at 11:30 pm to see the Trollfjord. We went outside earlier at 11:00 pm and witnessed an amazing sun set (almost le soleil de minuit/midnight sun but at 11:10 pm instead), just before reaching the Trollfjord. The pictures below will tell it all!

We arrived in Tromso, the most northern point that we will reach on this round the world trip :)) Our host was really kind and picked us up. Another beautiful room in a beautiful house renovated with great taste. Sally was/is English. She and her husband invited us for dessert. Their neighbor was here too. We had a wonderful discussion on a number of subjects....of course they had many questions in regards to the "Trumpism effect" in the US. Europeans don't get it...we don't either. We visited the beautiful modern cathedral and the polar museum. We learned that many years ago, Norwegian fisherman summer expeditions to the Svalbard island were aimed at catching walruses. Imagine catching a walrus?! I helped catch tuna and thought these fish were gigantic but a walrus that weights tons! It was a heroic and extremely difficult task. When all walruses had been killed around the island, fishermen started to focus on seals for their meat and fur. A real carnage. They had no choice but stop when seals were almost all decimated as well. Overfishing happens today all around the world. How could this be stopped?

This concluded our visit of Norway. This was awesome, better than what we anticipated. The weather particularly was quite nice. Only two days of heavy rain. Next Sweden and Stockholm by plane on SAS :)) The next blog will be posted soon.
