Puno is located along Lake Titicaca.at an altitude of 12,500 feet / 3,810 m. From here, we took a boat to go to one of the Uros floating island and to Taquile island. They both are quite beautiful.
The Uros floating island is made with the Totora aquatic reed that grows abundantly in the lake. The reeds are also used to make boats, houses and crafts. We were told that these islands can last for up to 35 years. There are more than 80 small islands and the people are partly living off tourism, which makes the experience not as authentic as one would wish. It is fascinating though to have a chance to witness how these people are living.

Taquile Island
About 2,200 people live on this island. The people on this island are known for their highest quality handicrafts in Peru. They have created an innovative community-controlled sustainable tourism model. Their society is based on community collectivism. The economy is based on fishing, terrace farming horticulture based on potatoe cultivation and tourism. They have elected to use solar panels to generate energy. The majority of Taquilenos are catholic and keep their ancestral culture and maintain their traditional clothing.
