Arica is a surfing beach town along the Pacific in the north of Chile. Since Bolivia lost access to the ocean in a war in the eighteen hundreds against Chile, Arica serves as a free port to Bolivia. Arica has a strategic location by being near the Pan-American highway. As many as 700-800 trucks loaded with goods leave Arica to go to La Paz Bolivia daily. We did witness this truck traffic on the highway going to Putre (next post).
