The Glaciers - A strenuous hike

We really wanted to see glaciers while in Norway. We realized that we were going to drive in the proximity of Flatbreen glacier and Glenn found a possibility of a 3 hr hike to the glacier (5 hr round trip). We were going to hike to a self catered cabin called "Flatbrehytta cabin" which is at the base of the glacier. We found the base of the trail and parked the car. We started the hike. It became steeper and steeper as we went up the mountain. Beautiful waterfalls and streams along the way, lots of water again. We found amazing wild blueberries along the way but this time, I could not afford to eat too many. We had to keep hiking up. The view of the valley and the fjord was beautiful. We could judge our progress by looking down! Finally we found the snow. My legs were starting to be very tired....Another turn and I heard Glenn scream...the cabin!. We had found Flatbrehytta and not only the cabin...the glacier too. What a reward after all this hiking. So majestic and surreal. The pictures do not recreate the atmosphere, the absolute silence up there.
We had lunch inside the cabin. Three guys from Germany had slept in it and had left their bags outside. As we were enjoying our lunch, they came back. They had gone closer to the glacier in the morning. We chatted for a while and decided to head back down. The up was hard but talk about the down...a real killer for the legs. Rocks and large steps, mud...hard, hard, hard. The trail was a loop, so we had gone up one way and we were going down another way. this made it really nice. The scenary was amazing. After 5 hrs of walking we made it to the parking lot. It was such a relief to sit in the car :)) and drive towards Nordfjordeid.
