La Norvege - Visit of Oslo

Oslo for 3 days. Airbnb is treating us well...room in a nice apartment in the Grunerlokka area. Lively area with ethnic restaurants. Delightful turkish cuisine on day 1, vietnamese on day 2. Where are the Norwegian restaurants??

We enjoyed the National Gallery hosting a few paintings from Norvegian Edvard Munch (The Scream, Madonna). Really impressive was the Vigeland museum and the park next door to the museum. This sculptor is amazing...so embarrassed to say that I had never heard about him. Many of his sculptures are exhibited in the park. Great visit, very sunny weather. We passed in front of the Nobel Institute where every year experts decide who will get the Nobel price. The beautiful new opera house was fun to visit as well. Designed by Oslo-based architectural firm Snohetta, the Opera house which opened in 2008, has been designed to resemble a glacier floating in the waters off Oslo. My picture below (#8) does not capture the theme very well I have to admit. The inside of the Opera house is beautiful too.

On day 2, we went to the Viking Museum and the Fram museum. The Fram museum describes North and South Pole expeditions by Norvegians explorers such as Nansen, Shackleton and Amundsen on a boat called The Fram. A movie shows how amazingly difficult this had been! They were out there sometimes for several years. This put things in perspective for us touring the world. Is what we do difficult? Amundsen discovered the Northwest Passage between Greenland and Northern Canada on his 1903-1906 voyage. In 1911, he led his men to become the first to reach the South Pole, using the Fram shipWho will ever be able to better demonstrate resilience, perseverance, curiosity, focus, risk taking,  and conviction?
At the end of the day, we took a boat to go to an island nearby. Great skies....lucky us!
